Sunday at 1030 - Main Diet of Worship

Worship is central to life at the Cathedral - as it has been for nearly a thousand years. The main diet of worship takes place on a Sunday at 1030. The service follows the Reformed pattern of the Approach to God, the Word of God, and finally the Response to God. Worship begins with a warm welcome, followed by a mix of music and words, ancient and modern, centred around the seasonal pattern of the Christian year. The Cathedral's choir contributes to worship weekly, as well as occasional instrumentalists, under the guidance of the Director of Music, Ian Robertson BSc, CertRCO, Dip ABRSM.

The Cathedral uses the Church of Scotland's most recent hymnal - Church Hymnary: Fourth Edition, as well as hymns from diverse musical traditions such as Taize and the Iona Community. Hymns both ancient and modern take their place in our worship, and liturgy and responses are not infrequent - as we seek to worship God in forms both old and new.

Holy Communion, at which all are welcome, is celebrated informally on the third Sunday of every month, following the main diet of worship, and more formally three times a year in the months of March, June and October.

All age family worship takes place on the first Sunday of every month, again at 1030, but for the shorter duration of 45 minutes. These services differ from regular Cathedral services due to their interactive and informal format.

All age family worship is also held at the High points of the year, such as Easter, Christmas and special occasions.

In common with many churches around the world, the Cathedral follows the Revised Common Lectionary.

Outside the Cathedral in the Kirkyard, a focus for prayer is the Peace Pole - which in common with others all over the world - has the words 'May Peace Prevail on Earth' scribed in six different languages.
